Man Barbershop Academy is a state-licensed barber school in McAllen, Texas. Our 1,000 clock hour Class A Barber Program trains you on real clients and earns you the credential you need to sit for the Texas barber written and practical exams.
Already a licensed cosmetologist? Add your barber license in 300 hours for $500.
1,000 clock hours, ending in a Certificate of Completion. The curriculum follows Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requirements for the Class A Barber license — 700 hours of core instruction and 300 hours of barbering specialty.
The foundation every license is built on: infection control, safety and sanitation, anatomy, implements, haircutting, fades and tapers, line-ups, shaving and beard work, scalp and hair care, and professional conduct.
TDLR lets this block go toward either cosmetology or barbering. We put all 300 hours into barbering — chemical services, color and texture, hairpieces, facials and skin care, and the business of running a chair.
Half the program can be done as distance learning through our student portal, on your own schedule. Theory only — every practical hour is earned in person on the floor, which is what the state requires.
For working cosmetologists who want the barber license too. Texas does not make you start over — if you hold an active Cosmetology Operator license, 300 hours at an approved barber school is all that stands between you and the Class A Barber exams.
Three hundred hours of instruction for five hundred dollars. Installment arrangements are available, same as the full program.
The barbering work cosmetology school does not teach: straight-razor shaving, hot towel service, beard sculpting and line-ups, clipper work and fades, plus Texas barber law, sanitation and infection control.
When your hours are complete we submit them to TDLR and you sit for the barber written and practical examinations. Pass both and you hold both licenses.

$275 the day you enroll. That is the $175 enrollment fee, your $75 barber kit and the $25 state permit registration fee. The kit and the permit fee are not part of tuition.
Then $75 a week for 10 months until the $3,000 tuition is paid. No interest and no financing charge — the price on this page is the price. Cash, debit and credit are accepted.
The 1,000 hours can be finished in as little as 5½ months if you attend full time, but tuition must be paid in full before the program is closed out — before your Certificate of Completion is issued and your hours are submitted to TDLR.

Man Barbershop Academy is licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to deliver the Class A Barber Program. Our curriculum follows TDLR Rule 16 TAC §83, and completing the program gives you the credential you need to sit for the Texas barber written and practical examinations.
Man Barbershop Academy is a newly established institution. Graduation rate, licensure examination pass rate and employment rate data will be published here as that data becomes available.
Completing the program does not guarantee licensure and does not guarantee employment. Texas licensure is subject to the TDLR requirements in effect at the time you apply, and criminal history or other background factors may affect your eligibility. You have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from TDLR before you enroll — see tdlr.texas.gov/crimhistoryeval.htm.
